Daylight / Girl on Fire, Raise Your Glass Cover

I was really busy the past few weeks and I spent 3 consecutive weekends away from my hobbies. To start off, I went home to Davao, then in the second week I went to Siargao for the 20th Anniversary Celebration of our company, then lastly, in the 3rd week, I spent the weekend with my high school friends by spending the night in the house of our batchmates away from the city and enjoying the infinity pool in their subdivision's clubhouse. If you spend almost a month away from the things you like doing, you should be doing something more interesting and my 3 weeks get away is simply one of the best 3 weekends of my life.

In our Siargao Outing, we had a simple performance by playing an intermission number composed of a cover of the mash up of Daylight and Girl on Fire by Maroon 5 and Alicia Keys followed by a cover of Raise Your Glass by Pink to celebrate the 20 successful years in our company. I'm a bit hesitant to share this to the public but this is just for the fun of it. We had many errors, voice is not very good because our throats were already tired and dry for the day's activities and there were also technical challenges, but what's important was that everybody had a good time and we are lucky enough to have this moment captured on video by our other office mates.

Band members: Dwain Jacob Cadenas - Beatbox, June Alice Besinga - Guitar/Vocals, Alvin Sarael - Bass, Eden Jane Pareno - Keyboards, Kayzel Marie Garbo - Vocals/Shaker, and yours truly Bryan Inno Wong - Vocals/Shaker!

Back to reality now and I am more than willing to get back to my weekly schedule of activities! ^_^

Featured deck: Simic Undying by Sanberth Claracay

Last Dragon's Maze Gameday, there was a Simic deck that made it to the Top 8 here in Neutral Grounds Cebu. It was actually the deck of my friend Mr. Sanberth Claracay, that employs the strategy of Undying creatures + Rapid Hybridization + Evolve to beat the opponent down. Personally, I would like to call this deck Simic Undying Evolve, I think it sounds cooler hehe. Anyway, the concept of the deck is actually very strong. The deck is aggressive and early creatures can quickly evolve by using the combo and Rancors give your creatures the needed reach. Zameck Guildmages ensure you have cards in your hand or can make your creatures bigger. With this aggressive strategy in the offensive end, board disruption and counter magic will seal the deal for this deck.

I talked to Sanberth after the tournament and picked his brains about the deck and how it fits in the current meta game. I have attached my short conversation with Sanberth. I really thought his deck was worth posting because the deck is very interactive and seems very fun to play with.

Why you chose the deck?

Simple, I love nature and science...but MTG wise, this deck is also flexible enough to be an Aggro, Mid-Range, Control Deck...Although
its main core is Aggro. Each creature inflicts enough damage, and when combined is much more powerful. The combination of Undying creatures plus
Evolve is very cool. This deck packs so much offensive power, but does not mean its left out on the defensive side.

Your favorite cards in the deck and why?

All?! because each cards synergizes with the other. My favorite cards are the Elusive Krasis, Stranglewood Geists, Rapid Hybridization, Simic Charm as well as SPELL RUPTURE... The look in their faces when you counter their spells and they cannot pay that amount.

Notable Cards

Elusive Krasis - it can evolve and it's unblockable, good finisher.
Strangleroot Geists - Haste and Undying? Good for Rapid Hybridization.
Rapid Hybridization - Who does not want an 3/3 Amphibian-Reptile hybrid? for just 1 Blue Mana.
Spell Rupture - A good counter spell if you've got enough power, literally!.
Simic Charm - Very very good card, can be used both offensively and defensively.

Why do you think the deck is good ?

Just remember the acronym SIMIC.

S - afe
I - mpetuous
M - etagaming and
I - nexpensive
C - asting Cost

Dragon's Maze Gameday 2 : American (WUR) Aggro (Minotaurs and Clerics)

On the second day of the Dragon's Maze Gameday Weekend, I finished in the top 8, at least an upgrade in the performance in day 1. I used the WUR aggro version with full sets of Boros Reckoners and Geist of Saint Trafts in the main deck. This deck is commonly known as Blue White Red Geist or Blue White Red Minotaurs and Clerics.

What I really like about these 2 creatures in the main deck is that with them, you can possibly deal with both control and aggro match-ups. Geist of Saint Traft is very good against control. Geist is one of the fastest beaters in the format right now and can finish the game if left unanswered or if there are no blockers on your opponent's side of the table. The problem is when your opponents is aggro and has a lot of creatures that can block your Geist. The deck will try to solve this by playing a lot of removal spells and by saving your Geist of Saint Traft via removal spells, Snapcaster Mage + removal spell in graveyard and via Resotation Angel. This is also the reason for the Boros Reckoner. While Geist shines in the control matchup, Boros Reckoner shines in Aggro and midrange matchups.

What is also amazing in this deck is that you have access to infinite life via Boros Reckoner, Azorius Charm and Boros Charm. What you just need to do is to make sure that your Boros Reckoner will be damaged (it can be by your own damage spells or via blocking or when is becomes blocked). Then cast Azorius Charm to add lifelink to the minotaur. Then cast Boros Charm to give the Reckoner indestructibe.

When the reckoner is dealt damage, you need to redirect the damage to itself. The now-indestructible Boros Reckoner will keep damaging on itself an essentially infinite amount of times.. Since it has lifelink from Azorius Charm, in addition to dealing infinite damage, it gives you infinite life. Wash, rinse, repeat however many times. The only problem that you have to deal with now is mill or cards like Sorin Markov that takes you life down to 10 (but no worries, those cards are not in standard right now).

Lastly, this may be for American decks both the Midrange version and the Flash version, one of the main reasons why I continue to run this deck is that I really like Turn / Burn. This card technically answers almost every strong creature in the format except those with hexproof and can also quickly transform any combat scenario to your advantage.
